While you come across a circuit the above 2 components are mostly seen.The basic function of resistor is to oppose current flow while for a capacitor its function depends upon whether it is working in an ac circuit or a DC circuit. In ac applications it is somewhat similar to resistor but in DC application it is like a storage tank. It stores some energy.
